
Acid Phophatase
Its’ Uses: Acid Phophatase is primarily used to diagnose and stage prostatic carcinoma and to monitor the efficacy of treatment.

There is no fasting required for this blood test.
Interfering Factors: Falsely high levels of acid phospahatase may occur in males after a digital rectal examination.
Elevated levels of 25% - 50% may occur for up to 48 hours after prostate manipulation.
Drugs that may cause increased level of acid phosphatase include androgens, clofibrate and alglucerase.
Drugs that may cause decreased levels include fluorides, phosphates, oxalates, heparin and alcohol.

* Hyperparathyroidism
* Metastisis to the bone
* Multiple Myeloma
* Sickle Cell Crisis

* Lysosomal disorders
* Renal disease
* Liver disease, such as cirrhosis
Remarks: Because acid phosphatase is also found in high concentrations in seminal fluid, this test can be performed on vaginal secretions to investigate alleged rape.
