ICIM Medics Osteoporosis Assessment is used to evaluate your risk of developing osteoporosis and to help in the diagnosis of osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is characterised by a loss of bone density and a change in bone structure, which increases the susceptibility of your bones to fracture.
ICIM Medics use the Osteoporosis Assessment to evaluate your risk of developing Osteoporosis. We can then advise on ways to prevent or decrease your risk of acquiring bone fractures.
Osteoporosis is known as a “silent disease”, i.e. there are no symptoms until a fracture occurs. 1 in 5 men and 1 in 3 women are affected by osteoporosis. If you are elderly, a fracture could be fatal. Hip fractures are the most significant problem relating to osteoporosis. If you fracture your hip you will almost always be hospitalised, you may need a hip replacement and you may need help during your rehabilitation at home. If you are a woman and past menopause your likelihood of developing osteoporosis is high, especially if you have or have had a lack of calcium in you diet.
ICIM Medics use Bone sonometry to perform the assessment, which has advantages over the traditional x-ray methods for assessing you bones. Bone sonometry does not use radiation, is quick and safe, and typically lower in cost. Your results will be available immediately.
Hospitals prefer to use the more expensive option of a DEXA scan, but this is not necessary to assess your risk of osteoporosis. ICIM Medics offer a safe (no risk of radiation), non-invasive risk of bone assessment, in a relaxed friendly environment. Your results will be processed immediately by our nurse, and a list of preventative measures will be given to you and explained at the end of your appointment.
The whole procedure takes about 30 minutes and is pain free. There are no side effects or risks of radiation.
The Osteoporosis Assessment includes:
• Consultation with the Nurse
• Bone Sonometry
• An osteoporosis health questionnaire
• Lifestyle counselling
Your results will be available immediately.
