What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a hands-on treatment emphasising the structural integrity of the body and the effect this has on the functions the body is called on to perform. It specialises in all musculo-skeletal problems that affect areas including the spine, muscles, ligaments, tendons and nerves. The treatment uses a variety of manual techniques such as massage, stretching, articulation, manipulation and mobilisation of muscles, ligaments and joints.
I’ve heard that Osteopaths ‘crack’ the spine?
Osteopaths use joint manipulation to free joints where their movement is restricted. This involves placing the patient in a position and applying a small amount of controlled and focussed force to place a short, sharp traction across the joint. This often results in a click or popping noise coming from the joint. Manipulation is just one of many techniques which Osteopaths use, and can be avoided if necessary.
What to expect during a treatment:
It is normally necessary to undress down to underwear for examination of the affected area and treatment. Depending on the problem the patient will be asked to perform certain movements in order to ascertain any restriction in movement and a full case history will be taken to ensure that Osteopathic treatment is suitable for the patient and tailored to suit the individual.
What conditions does Osteopathy treat:
Although often associated with back problems, Osteopathy is also used to treat a wide range of conditions including:-
- All joint problems
- Back and neck pain including whiplash
- Sciatica
- Shoulder problems including Tendonitis & Frozen shoulder
- Hip, knee, ankle & foot problems
- Sports injuries
- Trapped nerves
Osteopathic treatment may also help health conditions such as:
- Headaches
- Migraines
- Menstrual related conditions (PMT & Menstrual pains)
- Asthma
- Arthritis
- Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME)
